Being a National School and controlled by the Central government, Currently the school accommodates nearly 3500 students and an academic and non-academic staff of around 200. ==Inauguration Ceremony == In 1942 February 14 at 3.00 PM Kegalu Vidyalaya was made open with Don Baron Jayatilaka and Mr. Gunapala Malalasekara, P. De S. Kularathne, E.W. Adhikaram, H.W. Amarasooriya and Rev.Naradha Thero gracing the event. Initially Kegalu Vidyalaya was started as an English medium Buddhist mixed school. Later on with the government regulations over the national schools, the medium was altered to Sinhalese medium and the composition was changed from mixed to Boys.
